Legacy Lyrics – The Best Years Of My Life
The Best Years Of My Life is a selection of lyrics that have been lying around, waiting to see the light of day. I offer a short outline of each track below:-
Make Me Happy (Write Me A Breakup Song)
Written by Go Birch
I wrote two songs on the theme of break up, (both from the perspective of the partner wanting the breakup to happen). One was in the form of a ‘Dear John’ letter and the other about a sailor’s marriage. I’m can’t remember if I ended up combining them or if this is one complete one.

I wrote this many years ago as part of what was to be a “poperetta” about the various inhabitants of an imaginary town. I can’t remember how many songs I got into it (although I did find some other unfinished lyrics) and whether any tracks have surfaced from the other attempts. The only “poperetta” I completed was the God EP
Lyrics: Susie Sunshine
Written by Go Birch
Written in the 90’s, and musically another of my Harleyesque tracks, I think I just thought I would wait and see what happened next before I committed it to music. What happened next was more of the best years of my life. ‘Til it all went to pieces.

A tale of might have been
Lyrics: Take A Chance (And Kiss Her)
Perhaps if i’d told you straight away
The sight of your face makes my day
By now i’d be your lover too
Not just a friend there for you
Maybe if i’d spoken from the heart
Not as a friend locked in that part
The advice i gave wouldn’t make you better
But show that you and I could matter
Next time around i wouldn’t be such a good listener
I’d take a chance and go ahead and kiss her
What if when i found you crying in the hall
I’d just taken your hand and said forget it all
I should have put you in my car and drove forever
Or at least ‘til I convinced you we should be together
There’s so much you can do blessed with hindsight
Make all the right moves, say everything just right
Next time around i wouldn’t be such a good listener
I’d take a chance and go ahead and kiss her
Next time around i wouldn’t be just a shoulder
I’d take a chance and i’d really hold her
I’d take a chance and go ahead and kiss her
I’d take a chance and kiss her
I’d take a chance
Written by Go Birch
One of the very early songs. Put forward as a song for Big Moon when we were gigging. The drummer, Adam, took on the vocals and did a great job, but it never made the setlist.
Lyrics: Arthur's Song
What cruel twist of fate have the sisters dealt
To see me born again without my past blocked out
It’s true I lived nights too few
When you called me Lord
But I lived days enough, before I died by the sword
Together, in the same place, I alone have memory
I choose to recall your grace and forget your infidelity
I could take you to Merlin’s tomb and carve hearts on it’s bark
Yet this voice inside me says ‘lead man from the dark’
Give me an answer do
Where’s that wisdom now
Am I one for all or am I all for one
Can that one be you?
I’ve secrets to tell, that before I’d never dare
Are they for your ears alone or should everyone share?
It’s true all man would benefit from a sip from Joseph’s cup
Isn’t that a responsibility by death I’ve given up
Give me an answer do
Where’s that wisdom now
Am I one for all or am I all for one
Can that one be you?
Who today would follow me,
I see no sword in a stone
No-one sits around tables to listen to unknowns
Let me live to love Guinevere
Be my Lady of the lake
We could dive for Excalibur and laugh in our own wake
Give me an answer do
(be my lady of the lake)
Where’s that wisdom now
(We could dive for Excalibur)
Am I one for all or am I all for one
(Let me live to love Guinevere)
(We could dive for Excalibur and laugh in our own wake)
Can that one be you?
Holly Alice left behind an albums worth of songs, some complete, most recorded to demo level. I am hopeful that these will be completed at some point, to highlight her talent. HollyAlice.com
