The Artificial Heart Of Gort Bishop

Nov. 13th, 2025 – Stream here…

The Artificial Heart Of Gort Bishop is a selection of lyrics that I have had lying around, either still in progress or because I was unsure of where they fitted in the ‘feel’ of whatever album I was working on. There are also some re-imaginings of early lyrics. Largely deeper and darker then the normal love/break-up song on other albums and a bit heavier musically.

A short outline of each track below:-

I’ll Make Hell At Your Gate (A Powerful Heart)

Written by Go Birch

When I lost my dachshund Barmaby I wrote a number of songs dealing with loss, grief and denial. At the time I wouldn’t have believed I could ever feel a worse sense of loss. Time proved me very wrong.

Lyrics: I'll Make Hell At Your Gate (A Powerful Heart)
I got a message from God…

Stop dissing me if you want to come home
If you ever want to join your kin
You need to believe.
Start spreading the word and doing my work
Till I decide to receive you

I replied… Let me explain…

My point of view hasn’t changed
I know you exist in all your heavenly bliss
And I know it was down to us…
But since you lost your own son
You’ve gotten bitter and quit
When You’re supposed to be bigger than us

You’ve done nothing since Jericho …
And candles burn swift for past glories
It’s not just me, you’ve watched us all cry
Most have stopped asking ‘cos you always deny.
So before you dare to ransom my heart
Shine a new light and start playing your part

Till then my faith is covert
I’ll find my own way to handle my hurt.
When my time ends and my body succumbs

I’ll make hell at your gates and march through your halls
Not you or your whole angel host will keep us apart
‘Cos this much love gives me a powerful heart

I’ll make hell at your gates and march through your halls
Not you or your whole angel host will keep us apart
‘Cos this much love
Gives me a powerful heart

‘Cos this much love
Gives me a powerful heart

‘Cos this much love…
gives me a powerful heart
A powerful heart

A Black Hole Doesn’t Let Any Light In

Written by Go Birch

Another lyric from the Barmaby grief set
Lyrics: A Black Hole Doesn't Let Any Light In
My eyes burn
My throat constricts
My chest has got someone standing on it
They say with time grief goes away
But my heart breaks more every day

Sleep’s replaced by a mind of tricks
I’m just not living like I used to

I try to paper over the cracks
I count my blessings
I look ahead
But I’m just treading water
‘Til I climb back into an empty bed

Before I go to sleep
I pray to die
I wake up
And I wonder why

I wonder why

I understand I’ve broken down
But when you can’t touch the bottom
You tend to drown
I can’t see the shore
And I don’t know which way I’m facing

I get offers of help
I say not today
If I’m going to pull through
I’ll do it my way
But of course I don’t know what I’m thinking

I’m sinking

There’s still love
And I love too
But this hole is dark and deep
And pulling me apart
And a black hole doesn’t let any light in

I’ve Woken Up In Your Dream (My Nightmare)

Written by Go Birch

A lyric I enjoyed writing but struggled to get it where I wanted it to go musically. Happy with this.
Lyrics: I've Woken Up In Your Dream (My Nightmare)
Azaleas border the freshly cut front lawn
Past the red tricycle my footsteps crunch on the white gravel drive
The basketball hoop is fixed above the garage
As I head to the open front door

The scent of lilies fill the room
The deep shag carpet is soft underfoot
Family photos line the wall
Spring flowers fill several vases
Rex the retriever wags my way
Carrying a ball ready for play

You appear smiling from the kitchen
Oven gloved hands wave a greeting
There’s flour on one cheek and in your hair
The duck patterned apron accentuates the bump
When you turn and point at the chocolate fountain

Wait a second…

I think I’m gonna scream.
I’ve woken up in your dream

Your dream. Your dream since a little girl
Two point four children and a trampoline
A self cleaning oven and a bread making machine.
A harpsichord?
(A harpsichord?)
I’ve woken up in your dream.

The front doors closed.
Rex is on guard. The ball replaced by a snarl.
The front room is now one long hall
The Shining twins stand far away
Their breath feels a whole lot closer

I’ve woken up in your dream.
My nightmare

I’ve woken up in your dream.
My nightmare

I’ve woken up in your dream.
My nightmare

Wake me

Spiral

Written by Go Birch

More sadness.

Lyrics: Spiral

I was looking for a circle
I found a spiral

I thought I could turn my life around
I turned it down

You told me the only way was up
You lied
Or you were naive
Either way you were wrong

There’s a long way down to go

A long way down
And darker
Deep
And black

I can’t see any way back
I can’t see anything

Can’t open my eyes
Without seeing the truth

The truth hurts

So why would you look
When you can ride the corkscrew down
You can burrow in the ground
Bury your head in the sand

Close your ears your eyes
Your mind
I can’t remember where I put mine

I wasn’t using it

So it’s easy to lose
So the saying goes

Lost everything
You
Were everything

The circle will never close

Like a spiral
Going round and down
Deeper
And darker

Dum Dum

Written by Go Birch

One of the early songs. Played at my first ever gig alongside James and Phil (before we even had a band name) but never recorded.
Lyrics: Dum Dum
Last night, feeling kind of homesick
Thought if I asked, you might come home quick
No chance, wasn’t worth the gamble
Too much rejection just makes me ramble

Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum

Lost hope, want to let the world know
Strong inhibitions tell me not to let go
Secrets shared, are problems created
Kept thoughts locked up, or they’ll be X-rated

Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum

Two times, just like any other
Love thy neighbour, protect your brother
Soft options, but is it worth much?
Hard target, your answer, cold to the touch

Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum

Large contradiction, like a black heaven
Slight confusion where angels have trodden
Heart bleeding, where you’ve left me derelict
Brave face, trying to conceal it

Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum

Big decisions made in too much haste
Small solutions mixed into a paste
Strong feelings, so where will the meeting be?
Final warning, will you decide the policy?

Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum, Dum Dum

Hidden meaning, dig deep you may find treasure
Hard cash keeps them something they can measure
Plain truth, careful lies is just straight talking,
Quite selfish, I know the answer and I’m walking

Broken & Open (Like A Heart Needs To Be)

Written by Go Birch

Me playing around with words on the theme of a heart.
Lyrics: Broken & Open (Like A Heart Needs To Be)
The first time I saw you
My heart skipped a beat

The last time I saw you
It fell to my feet

Broken and open
Like a heart needs to be

Lived in and worn thin
Squeezed out like a sponge

The first time we danced
I had my heart in my mouth

The last time we kissed
I had my heart torn out

Broken and open
Like a heart needs to be

Mushed up and beaten
And quivering like a jelly

I told you I loved you
With my heart on my sleeve

You told me you were leaving
While my heart caved in

I told you forever
‘Cos my heart belonged to you
You took it, misused it
And broke it in two

Now it’s
Broken and open
Like a heart needs to be
Broken and bleeding
And useless to me

Now it’s
Broken and open
Like a heart needs to be
Broken and bleeding
And useless to me

Give Me TV (Greedy People)

Written by Go Birch

Taking a look at the state of the world with this one and the role TV has to play

Lyrics: Give Me TV (Greedy People)

The weather is broken
The forests are burning
Whole countries are starving
Corporations crave war

Give me TV

Is it any wonder the world is broken
When we keep believing in broken people
The greedy people promise us more
We vote for the greedy people
The greedy people rule
We want more
And more
And more

Dark clouds over Europe
Smoke clouds over Brazil
Radioactive clouds over Russia
Smog clouds over China
Dumb clowns in the White House

Profit before people
Metal. Before nature
Processions before compassion
Me before you
I’m one of the greedy people too
I’m one of the broken people

Give me TV

Show me the money

A human being without humanity
A void that only Money can fill
A slave to commodity.

Look at me.
A bloated bi-ped with a low I.Q.

I’m one of the greedy people too
I’m one of the broken people
Give me TV

I’m A Vigilante

Written by Go Birch and Neil

Had fun playing with the lyrics. Wanted my favourite rapper to do the vocals, but it didn’t fit with him at the time, so went this route.
Lyrics: I'm A Vigilante
When I was younger
I did my bit for Queen and country
Now I’m older and
I am a vigilante

I like to go out and flatten hoodies
I like to go out and shake down druggies
In the afternoon I catfish peedos
Early evening I move on to weirdos

I’m a bargain basement Batman with a baseball bat

It doesn’t matter what flavour you are
I’ll catch you up ‘cos you pimp your car
If I see a slasher, I’ll b there in a flash and
you better watch out if you’re mobile snatchin

Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the bleeding
Your sentence is hospital food and a long time healing

It’s unpaid work but it’s satisfying
I really like to see big yobs crying

I wanna encounter a two tier Peela!

I’d audit in the the round
A Tik Tok thriller

I’m a bargain basement Batman with a baseball bat

It doesn’t matter what flavour you are
I’ll catch you up ‘cos you pimp your car
If I see a slasher, I’ll b there in a Flash and
You better watch out if you’re mobile snatching

I still do my bit for King and country
I go out and punish the naughty
I’m a vigilante

I still do my bit for King and country
I go out and punish the naughty
I’m a vigilante

Dream Friends

Written by Go Birch

Just fun. Dropping into different parts of the past and playing with the imagery.
Lyrics: Dream Friends
I had a dream in which I was Merlin
Dancing with strangers in pre-war Berlin
Marlene Dietrich was wearing pyjamas
and playing war games with Hitlers youth army

I felt like I belonged
I felt like writing a song
all my thoughts were sharp and incisive
all my words were cruel and divisive

Boys wanted to be me
Girls wanted to see me
I was their darling and they…
They were my dream friends

I had a vision I was Nostradamus
Walking with Jesus on a street in Damascus
we talked of a future so clear and simple
and kissed in the moonlight outside a temple.

I felt like I belonged
I felt like writing a song
All my ideas were sound and concise
All my plans were diligent and precise

I had a notion I was Mother Teresa
Smashing up slots in the halls of Las Vegas
Brandon Flowers was meeting and greeting
and getting excited at what I was tweeting

I felt like I belonged
I felt like writing a song
All my motives were pure and white
All my choices were timely and right

I had a shot at being George Best
with the keys to the city of Budapest
All the best teams shored up their defence
while I weaved my magic in all the right places

I felt like I belonged
I felt like writing a song
All my weaknesses are mine to bear
All my knowledge is mine to share

I dreamt that I was King Kong
in the jungle of New York I belonged
I busked in the shadow of the Empire State
as frightened uptowners put money on my plate

I felt like I belonged
I felt like writing a song
all my prejudices justified and inbred
All my apologies sincere and unsaid

Shopping (I’m Off My Tree)

Written by Go Birch

There is an argument we spend too much time online and have become too reliant on the internet, even before we look at the negative impacts of social media and online betting sites.
Lyrics: Shopping (I'm Off My Tree)
So, we’ve got free will.
Yet we buy what we’re sold
And we pay what we’re told.

We’ll get three for two
And throw one away
As long as there’s a deal
We’ll play.

I can bet on anything.
Bet I’ll win one day.
But it’ll cost so much money
I’ll need a loan till payday

TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, SnapChat, YouTube,
Whoops, there’s goes another 3.5 hours of my day
By the time I’ve listened to what my influencers have to say
I could miss the deadline for amazon delivery next day

It’s only 3.5 hours social media
It’s not like I’m hooked
I often log off
To play candy crush

Yeah, So I still play candy crush,
Of course I play Fortnite, what am I, a dinosaur?

I haven’t been to a shop in years
I’m struck at home repackaging my returns

Things get delivered to my door
They get returned for free
I’m on a shopping merry go round
And I’m off my tree

Rhythm Of The Evening

Written by Go Birch

Another early song that I kept coming back to.
Lyrics: Rhythm Of The Evening
We haven’t spoken
We’re talking by touch
My will has been broken
You wanted it such

You wanted me silent
To listen to my heartbeat
I wanted you still
To watch sweat  beads forming

And the rhythm of the evening is the rhythm of your breathing
The rhythm of your breathing is the rhythm of this evening

If I was crushed by passion
Then I’m lifted by desire
As your fingernails wander
My temperature gets higher

Again you pull me closer
To start on a new adventure
With our bodies in concert
We reach for mutual pleasure

And the rhythm of the evening is the rhythm of our breathing
The rhythm of our breathing is the rhythm of the evening

Then a bright light flashes
My brain again is burning
Though I feel like a giver
I’m rewarded for my yearning
’til the soft of dawn
Holds us like blanket
and the scent of your skin
Calms me like a cradle

Let’s Be Frank

Written by Go Birch with Holly Alice

Based on a sad couple we knew.
Lyrics: Let's Be Frank
You had your own hobbies
When you were free to choose
You used to use your own words
When you had your own views

Now it’s packed lunches
hot meals on the table

You’re an isolationist
And a whole lot racist
Let’s be Frank

Let’s be Frank

Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank
Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank

Wait…

Who chooses your friends now.
Sorry, where are your friends now?
Still, you’ve got a nice car and an unused boat
That the loans and the credit card keep afloat

But you’ve got no one to turn to
When you’re being put down
So you have to save face
By spreading the blame

Let’s be Frank
(vocoder)
Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank
Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank

You’re trapped in the fog of emotional blackmail
With a gold tag on your finger to keep you in jail
You’re living in a cult that you helped create
With a Frankenstein monster that feeds on hate

Let’s be Frank

Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank
Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank

Let’s be Frank.
Who else are you going to be?
You’ve become a ventriloquists dummy
Without a knee.
Soon you won’t have a leg to stand on.

Let’s be Frank

Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank
Let’s be Frank Let’s be Frank

I Am The World Worm

Written by Go Birch

Several versions of this over many years. Friend and ex-bandmate James Binning even had a go at it.
Lyrics: I Am The World Worm

Hello,
I am the World Worm.

I live on the bottom of the sea.
I am many years old.
I am older than the whale.
I will never die.

Whales die.
I eat them.
I turn them into dust.
It’s a lousy job,
But someone has to do it.

I am well equipped for my work.
I have a head.
I have an anus.
It was easier when I was young.
Then, I ate the whale and rocks that fell from the sky.

I took my time.

I’d eat them
Excrete them
I’d eat them, excrete them
I am the World Worm.
The world is my table,

And my toilet.

I am very big.
I could wrap myself
Around the world
I never do.
I might eat my anus.

I am very busy
turning waste to dust
There is much to eat
Now man feeds me,
I am never hungry.

I eat tankers, old weapons, sealed radioactive tubs.
I eat bike frames, batteries, waste from thousands of factories.

I never eat sailors,
That’s an old joke.

I’d eat them
Excrete them
I’d eat them, excrete them
I am the World Worm.
The world is my table,

And my toilet.
I am very busy.
I eat the dust
I’ve already made
To make room for more.
If the sea fills up…
Where would man be?

If the sea fills up…
Where would man be?

I am the World Worm.

Holly Alice left behind an albums worth of songs, most recorded to demo level. I am hopeful that these will be completed at some point, whether by me or someone else, to highlight her talent. HollyAlice.com
